IN CLASS SCREENING:
CHICAGO, STAY, JAWS, and one other. Analyze the editing, music, sound, and special effects for each film. See questions below for specific films. Use the SC 6, SC 7, SW6, and SW 7 docs along with the terms/glossary to complete your 50 pt analysis.
UNIT 3 Partner Homework: USE SCREENING CHECKLIST QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS FOR ANALYZING EDITING/SOUND, and anything else (100pts): This is your chance to put it all together and to show how much you've learned in UNIT 3. Choose one film that has been nominated for best editing, best visual effects, best sound editing, or best sound design and analyze the editing, music, and sound. See Yale clips, glossary of terms, handouts, questions, packets, etc to help you with your analysis. The more terms and elements you use, the better. Use as many examples from the film as possible and underline terms. SEE Questions for ANALYZING EDITING AND SPECIAL VISUAL EFFECTS DOC along with sc ch 6, sc ch 7, SW 6 and SW7 for help. Discuss the use of music throughout the film too (SEE MUSIC ANALYSIS SHEET for 3 parts of the film). You must include a shot by shot for editing, music, sound. See board for criteria.
1st Semester Final Group Project(50 pts): A comprehensive analysis of a sequence from any film of your choosing (see handout and links above in Units 2 and 3). You will choose a sequence from any film and analyze it for everything learned this semester from Units 1,2, and 3 or analyze the entire dummy script film.
Don't forget: study all of the terms, take notes on all films and group presentations, review your notes/outline, try the practice tests and study guide, study for the exam, and complete the Extra Credit(see website links for internet exercises for chapters related to this unit, see careers, and/or re-edit a trailer).
Screening Checklist: Here's how you can discuss the elements in your homework/class assignments: "________________ editing, sound, music, transitions, etc is used to evokes/conveys/mirrors _____________ or make the viewer feel/understand/experience _________."
- 1.Does the editing overall seem to create continuity or discontinuity? If the editing is mostly creating continuity, are there nonetheless moments when the editing creates discontinuity? What is the significance of those moments?
- 2. As each shot cuts to the next shot in the movie or clip, tap your finger on a tabletop or other surface to get a feeling for the rhythm of the editing. How would you describe that rhythm? Does it stay constant, or does it speed up or slow down? How does the rhythm affect your emotional response to the movie?
- 3. Keep track of the types of transitions from shot to shot. Does the editor use one transitional effect more than others? Are the transitions seamless and nearly unnoticeable, or do they call attention to themselves? Look for the different types of match cuts in the film. What sort of visual or narrative information is each match cut conveying?
- 4. Are there any moments in the movie in which the traditional conventions of Hollywood continuity editing—including use of the master shot, the 180-degree system, shot/reverse shot, match cuts, and parallel editing—are violated in some way? Describe how these moments appear onscreen. What do you think is the significance of these moments in the film?
- 5. Does the editing seem to indicate what the filmmakers want the audience to feel? What is that intended feeling? Do you feel it? Is it an appropriate feeling for the narrative and themes of the movie?
- 6. As you analyze a shot or scene, carefully note the specific sources of sound in that shot or scene. Also keep notes on the types of sound that are used in the shot or scene. Note carefully those moments when the sound creates emphasis by accentuating and strengthening the visual image. Does the sound in the shot, scene, or movie as a whole help develop characterization? If so, how does it do so?
- 7. In the movie overall, how is music used? In a complementary way? Ironically? Does the use of music in this movie seem appropriate to the story?
- 8. Do image and sound complement one another in this movie, or does one dominate the other?Does this film use silence expressively? In this movie, do you hear evidence of a comprehensive approach to sound—one, specifically, in which the film’s sound is as expressive as its images? If so, explain why you think so.
